Chase Jackson leads the way in Brussels this evening, setting a new record at the Memorial Van Damme in the women’s shot put with her throw of 20.90 meters in the fourth round.
The throw was five centimeters off her world lead of 20.95 meters from earlier this season and farther than anybody else this year. Sarah Mitton took home silver with 19.89 meters, and Jessica Schilder finished third with 19.58 meters in the final round.
These three women are also the top three in the world this year, with Schilder in the number two spot.
We saw four new national records, including two from the hosts, Belgium. Jana van Lent broke the women’s 5,000-meter record with 14:37.47, finishing tenth, while Marta García broke the Spanish record with 14:33.40, finishing fifth.
Naomi van den Broeck broke the women’s 400-meter hurdles record with 54.12 seconds, finishing third behind Gianna Woodruff and Anna Cockrell. The final national record of the evening was Ruben Querinjean’s run of 8:09.47, which broke the Luxembourg 3,000-meter steeplechase record.
Another notable performance includes Melissa Jefferson-Wooden running 10.76 seconds in the women’s 100-meter, winning by 0.32 seconds over Sha’Carri Richardson.
Winfred Yavi broke the women’s mile meter steeplechase world record, an event that’s rarely contested.
