The 2025 London Athletics Meet wrapped up this evening with five new meet records and two new world leads (three, including Great Britain women’s 4×100-meter relay team).
Arguably, the standout performance of the day came from the Lithuanian Myklas Alekna, who set a new Diamond League record with his third-round throw of 71.70m. Alekna went into the competition as the favourite, despite a stacked field of the world’s best throwers. He threw 71.70m in round three to seal victory over Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh (68.83m) and Lawrence Okoye (67.24m).
Alekna will be looking to win his first World Championship this September in Tokyo, after setting the world record earlier this season, but the road won’t be easy. Australia’s Matthew Denny has already put up the second farthest throw in history with 74.78m on the same day that Alekna broke the world record. Nine men have already thrown over 70m this year and will be vying for the top three spots come September.
Julien Alfred and Gudaf Tsegay moved to the top of the world rankings in their respective events. Alfred’s run of 21.71 into a -0.6m/s headwind is a new personal best and edged out Dina Asher-Smith (22.25 seconds) and Amy Hunt (22.31 seconds). This time gives her more than a 0.2-second lead over the United States’ McKenzie Long.
Ethiopia’s Tsegay is already familiar with leading the world’s top lists. The World Record holder in the 5,000-meter is now also the current world leader in the mile.
Tsegay’s time of 4:11.88 was also a national record and edged out Jessica Hull (4:13.68) and Sarah Healy (4:16.26). It’s worth noting that Faith Kipyegon ran 4:06.42 earlier this season at the Breaking4 event, but her time doesn’t count in the official rankings since it was an exhibition event.
Along with Alekna’s new Diamond League record, we saw athletes break several other meet records.
The young Emmanuel Wanyonyi ran 1:42.00 in the men’s 800-meter, with Canada’s Marco Arop hot on his trail with 1:42.22. Four men broke 1:43.00, with Max Burgin (1:42.36) and Bryce Hoppel (1:42.71) joining them. It’s been widely speculated that we may see a new world record at some point this season in the event.
Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech, not to be outdone by his Kenyan compatriot Wanyonyi, ran a new meet record in the men’s 1500-meter with 3:28.82 seconds. Josh Kerr finished close behind with 3:29.37.
