Some of the best athletes in the world lined up in Turku, Finland yesterday evening at the Paavo Nurmi Games.
Defending World Champion in the women’s hammer throw, Camryn Rogers, threw 74.59 meters to take home gold over Finland’s Silja Kosonen, who threw 73.21 meters.
“The Paavo Nurmi Games is one of my favorite meets. I love to compete here, the crowd is crazy, they are so passionate and everyone loves hammer. So coming here is a huge privilege,” said Rogers after the competition.
The men’s long jump gave us a rematch of Mattia Furlani and Liam Adcock, who recently battled it out at the Rome Diamond League. In Rome, it was Adcock who came home with the victory in dramatic fashion with a best jump of 8.34 meters in the last round. But yesterday would be Furlani’s day, winning with a jump of 8.11 meters. Adcock would get second with a jump of 8.05 meters. Tajay Gayle, who recently won the JBL Jump Fest, got third with a jump of 7.97 meters.
“This competition is important because we are three months from Tokyo, from now on we are trying to win each competition,” said Furlani on his performance. “I am happy that I could beat Liam today, he is a really good athlete. I met him for the first time in Nanjing where he won the bronze with 8m28 and I jumped 8m30 for the win. One time he wins, the other time I do. That’s the sport but it’s important to have fun and give the best of myself.”
New Zealand’s Zoe Hobbs took the women’s 100-meter with a time of 11.07 seconds. “I feel like my season has been up and down since Doha, some good things, some bad things,” said Hobbs.
This time is a season best for Hobbs, who was coming off an 11.43-second result from the 7th Irena Szewińska Memorial, Zdzisław Krzyszkowiak Stadium two and a half weeks ago.
