The 2025 Silesia Diamond League meeting has come to a close, giving us one new world lead and four new meet records, including Hungary’s 4 x 400-meter relay victory.
Karsten Warholm Delivers Performance of the Meet
Perhaps the performance of the meet was Karsten Warholm’s time of 46.28 seconds in the men’s 400-meter hurdles.
It’s the third fastest time ever run in the event behind his world record time of 45.94 seconds and Rai Benjamin’s time of 46.17 seconds, both run at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. With the World Championships returning to the city, it’s possible that it could once again be the site of a new world record.
On his performance, Warholm said, “To me this was a very good start to the second half of my season. I think it is promising towards Tokyo.”
Masai Russell Outstanding Run
Masai Russell ran an outstanding time of 12.19 seconds to win the women’s 100-meter. The time establishes a new Diamond League Record. Russell already ran the second-fastest time in history in May at Grand Slam Miami with 12.17 seconds.
Despite running under 12.20 seconds twice this year, Russell will have her hands full trying to fend off Tia Jones and Tobi Amusan in September. After the Lausanne meeting next week, Russell will be heading back home for a couple of weeks before spending a couple of weeks near Tokyo in preparation for the World Championships.
Faith Kipyegon Continues Magical Season
Coming into the competition, Faith Kipyegon had already run the fastest mile time ever in Nike’s Breaking4 exhibition event and broke the 1,500-meter world record.
The 29-time Diamond League winner established a new Diamond League record in the 3,000-meter this evening, running 8:07.04, giving her over a 27-second lead over second-place Likina Amebaw.
Thompson Edges Out Lyles
Kishane Thompson and Noah Lyles squared off again in the men’s 100-meter for the first time since the Olympics last summer. This time, Thompson crossed the line first, running a meet record of 9.87 seconds, with Lyles running 9.90 seconds in his second time contesting the event this year.
Thompson called his race “not so good, not so bad” despite breaking the record.
