Sports Career of Anderson Peters | Anderson Peters Javelin
Grenada’s Anderson Peters is one of the most accomplished javelin throwers of all time. In 2012, he became the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) U20 champion when he threw 78.28 meters to set a new meet record and national record. Later that year, he bettered his own national record with a throw of 79.65 meters to win bronze at the World U20 Championships in Poland.
His prodigious high school career would earn him a full scholarship to Mississippi State University. He improved his personal best to 84.81 meters and qualified for his first World Championship as a freshman. Although he didn’t make it to the final, Peters was the youngest competitor in the field, and it would be the last time he finished anywhere other than the top of the podium at a World Championship until 2023.
Peters turned professional at the age of 20. In 2018, he went on to medal at several international events, including winning the 2018 NACAC Championships in Toronto, finishing second at the Central American and Caribbean Games, and finishing third at the Commonwealth Games.
He made a statement internationally in 2019 when he won the gold medal at the World Championships in Doha with a throw of 86.89 meters. Later that summer, he won the Pan American Games with a throw of 87.31 meters.
Breaking 90 meters
After a disappointing result at the 2020 Olympics, where he failed to reach the final, Peters bounced back for his best season ever in 2022. He set a lifetime best of 93.07 meters at the Doha Diamond League in May and went on to defend his title in 2022 at the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, throwing 90.54 meters.
After the 2022 season, he was involved in a physical altercation on a party cruise boat, where he was beaten and thrown off the boat. Five men were charged with counts of grievous harm and stealing, and one man was charged with assault on Peters. Five men were also charged with causing harm to his brother, Kiddon.
Peters recovered from his injuries in 2023, but wouldn’t be in peak form in time for the World Athletics Championships, failing to make it to the final.
Peters won his first Olympic medal in 2024 when he threw 88.54 meters and captured bronze.
In 2024, Peters broke the 90-meter barrier once again with a throw of 90.61 meters to win the Diamond League event in Lausanne. His meet record put him ahead of the former Olympic gold medal winner Neeraj Chopra.
