Beatrice Chebet Early Life and Career
Beatrice Chebet is the defending Olympic and World Champion in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter. She also holds the world record in both events.
Chebet grew up in Londiani, a town in Southwestern Kenya. While she was living with her grandmother in middle school, a neighbor visited and noted that she thought Chebet had potential talent in athletics. The neighbor encouraged her grandmother to let her join an athletics camp. Subsequently, her grandmother asked her if she would be interested in pursuing athletics, and the rest is history.
Chebet joined the Lemotit Athletics Club in November 2016 at the age of 15.
Chebete reached international success within a few years, winning the Kenyan U20 5,000-meter title in 2018 and then going on to win the 5,000-meter title at the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland. The victory marked the first time since 2006 that a non-Ethiopian woman had won the title.
The next year, at the 2019 World Cross Country Championships, she won the U20 World Cross Country Championships in Århus, Denmark, narrowly edging out two of her competitors by less than a second, all finishing with a time of 20:50.
It didn’t take long for Chebet to start reaching success at the senior level. In 2021, she won the Diamond League Meeting in Doha, her first victory on the Diamond League tour.
Her first medal at the World Championships came at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. She claimed silver in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:46.75, only behind Gudaf Tsegay, who edged her out by less than a second. She also won her first Kenyan Championships and the Commonwealth Games in 2022 in the 5,000-meter.
In 2023, Chebet went on to win three more Diamond League meetings in Oslo, Stockholm, and Xiamen en route to a bronze medal in the Budapest World Championships in the 5,000-meter.
Beatrice Chebt becomes Olympic Champion
Although Chebet had already become one of the most successful active distance runners, 2024 would be the year that she solidified her legacy as one of the best runners of all time. At the 2024 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, she broke the world record in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 28:54.14. This time made her the first woman under 29 minutes.
Going into the competition, it was billed as a world record attempt by her competitor, Gudaf Tsegay, but it was Chebet that pulled away.
Chebet carried this momentum into the Paris Olympic Games, winning a gold medal in the women’s 5000 with a time of 14:28.56, edging out former champion Olympic and World Champions Sifan Hassan and Faith Kipyegon, and then winning the 10,000-meter with a time of 30:43.25.
Chebet wouldn’t slow down in 2025. Between April and July, she won four straight Diamond League meetings in the 5,000-meter. She set the 5,000-meter world record at the Prefontaine Classic with a time of 13:58.06.
At the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, she obtained the double in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter, winning gold in both.
