Lieke Klaver

Sports Career of Lieke Klaver | Lieke Klaver Biography

Lieke Klaver has been a staple on the Netherlands’ relay team for the past five years. She started training for athletics as a young child and spent most of her teenage years focused on the short sprints.

Her first time competing internationally outside of Europe was at the 2014 World Junior Championships, when she was still only 15, where she ran with the Dutch 4×100-meter team.

The next year, she competed at the European U20 Championships again with the Dutch 4×100-meter team and in the open 200-meter. Her time of 23.54 seconds (with a 4.2m/s wind) would place her sixth.

She returned to the World U20 Championships the next year with the relay squad, but the Dutch team was unfortunately disqualified. In 2017, she once again finished sixth in the 200-meter at the U20 European Championships. Klaver started focusing on the 400-meter from about 2018, still occasionally running shorter distances.

Klaver competed at her first senior World Championships in 2019, competing in the 4×400-meter relay in Doha. The Dutch team finished seventh.

She competed at her first Diamond League meeting the next year in 2020, running 52.35 seconds in Stockholm to finish third in the 400 meters. In September, she ran 50.98 seconds in Rome to take home gold.

Klaver qualified for the Olympics for the first time in 2021, competing in the 400-meter and 4×400-meter relay. She made it to the semi-finals in the 400-meter, running 51.37 seconds and finishing fourth in her section.

She competed in both the mixed and female 4×400-meter teams. The mixed team finished fourth, and the female team finished sixth.

The next year, Klaver built on this at the World Championships, helping the Dutch mixed 4×400-meter team finish second. She also ran 50.33 seconds in the final of the open 400-meter to finish fourth. In August, she went on to help the Dutch 4×400-meter team capture gold at the European Championships.

Klaver ran her personal best at the Silesia Diamond League meeting in 2023, running 49.81 seconds. She took this momentum into the World Championships in Budapest and helped the Dutch 4×400-meter team win gold, running with Eveline Saalberg, Cathelijn Peeters, and Femke Bol.

The Dutch 4×400-meter relay teams continued to excel in 2025. First, the female squad won the European Championships in Rome, and the mixed 4×400-meter relay squad finished third. Klaver also picked up third in the open 400-meter. She set a new personal best shortly after at the London Athletics Meet, running 49.58 seconds.

At the 2024 Olympics, Klaver ran on the mixed relay team, with Femke Bol being the other female member. The team picked up gold in what was the first edition of the event at the Olympics.

After finishing fourth in her semi-final of the Olympic 400-meter, Klaver returned to run on the female 4×400-meter team, helping the Dutch team pick up silver behind the Americans.

In 2025, Klaver won the European indoor 400-meter title, as well as ran on the winning women’s 4 x 400-meter team. She won her third national title in the 200-meter, running 22.82 seconds.

She ended her season by winning two medals at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, a silver medal with the mixed 4 x 400-meter team and a bronze with the female squad.
