Narve Gilje Nordås

Narve Gilje Nordås Early Life and Career

Narve Gilje Nordås is a Norwegian middle and long-distance runner. He won bronze at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest in the 1500-meter.

Nordås set the U19 Norwegian record in the half-marathon in 2016 with a time of 1:09:52 hours. He then improved his own record the next year.

Nordås started achieving international success in 2019 when he finished sixth in the 10,000-meter at the U23 European Championships. He went on to finish fifth in the 3000-meter at the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships and earned a spot on the Norwegian Olympic Team heading to Tokyo that summer. He would compete in the 5,000-meter, running 13:41.82, but didn’t advance to the final.

The next year, he qualified for the World Championships, but again missed the final as his teammate Jakob Ingebrigtsen went on to win the competition.

After a disappointing 17th-place finish at the Munich 2022 European Championships, Nordås is on the record saying that he “Seriously considered quitting after that race” but decided to continue for another year.

Continuing his training in 2023 turned out to be prudent since Nordås went on to win the 1,500-meter bronze at the World Championships in Budapest, running 3:29.68.

His 2024 season also started well, with a fifth-place finish at the World Athletics Indoor Championship in the 1,500-meter in Glasgow. He held onto the top position with one lap to go in the race but faded on the homestretch. On his Instagram profile, he posted,

“Had the position I wanted with 1 lap to go, still couldn’t match the front 4 on the homestretch. Not because they’re too fast, but because physiology applies: The person with the least lactic acid going into the bell lap has the fastest finish. I was not the least lactic person going into the bell lap, hence I did not have the fastest finish, and didn’t win. Simple as that.”

He went on to win his first Diamond League event later in the 2024 season when he ran 7:33.49 minutes in the 3,000-meter at the BAUHAUS-Galen in Stockholm.

At the 2024 Olympics, Nordås won his heat in the 5,000-meter with a time of 14:08.16. He went on to finish 17th in the final with a time of 13:31.34.

He also competed in the 1500-meter, getting through the qualifying and semi-finals to reach the final. His time of 3:30.46 placed him seventh.

He qualified for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo in both the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter. He didn’t advance out of the heats in the 5,000-meter and finished seventh in his semi-final in the 1,500-meter.

Narve Gilje Nordås Personal Life and Other Facts

Nordås competes for the track club Sandnes Irettslag. He’s been working with Gjert Ingebrigtsen, the father of Jabob Ingebrigtsen, since he was 15.

Ingebrigtsen had a highly publicized split with his three children after allegations of abuse emerged. The trial is ongoing, with an article published in The Guardian on May 15, 2025 revealing that the prosecutors are calling for a two and a half year jail sentence for allegedly hitting and verbally abusing his son Jakob. The judge said to expect a verdict on June 16.

In a 2023 interview with Citius Mag, Gjert Ingebrigtsen, revealed that he encouraged Nordås to step down from the longer events, such as the half-marathon and the 10,000 meters, to focus on the shorter events, seeing potential in him being a top 1500-meter runner.
