Sports Career of Sarah Healy | Sarah Healy Biography
Sarah Healy is an Irish middle-distance runner originally from Dublin. She started running competitively as a teenager, with her earliest results appearing on her World Athletics profile coming from 2015 when she was 14.
She first earned international success in 2017, when she won the 14th European Youth Olympic Festival in Hungary, running 4:19.85 over 1500 meters. The next year, she won the 1500-meter and 3000-meter at the European U18 Championships, also in Hungary.
In 2019, Healy won both the Irish U20 Championships in the 800 meters and the Irish Championships in the 1500 meters. She also finished second at the European U20 Championships in Sweden in the 1,500-meter.
Most of Healy’s 2020 season was disrupted due to the pandemic, but she did still compete at the prestigious Ostrava Golden Spike in the Czech Republic.
The next year was Healy’s international breakout year. In June, she improved her personal best in the 1,500-meter to 4:07.12 seconds in Sweden. This time earned her a berth in her first Olympic Games. She finished 11th in her heat in Tokyo. After the Olympics, she competed at the Diamond League Final and finished 10th.
Throughout 2022, Healy continued to compete at top circuit meetings, such as the Birmingham Diamond League. She ran a large personal best at the Ostrava Golden Spike meeting of 4:02.86.
Healy finished 12th in her heat at the World Championships and 11th in her heat at the European Championships.
In 2023, Healy finished second at the European U23 Championships in Finland and once again lowered her personal best at the Golden Spike meeting, running 4:01.75. Her next personal best came at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest when she ran 3:59.68 in the semi-final of the 1500 meters, breaking the four-minute barrier for the first time.
Healy bested this time the next year at the Silesia Diamond League meeting, running 3:59.65, and then broke it again 5 days later when she ran 3:58.42 at the Golden Gala meeting in Rome. Her season best qualified her for her second Olympic Games. At the Olympics, she made it into the semi-finals, running 4:07.60.
In 2025, Healy stood on top of the podium at a continental championships for the first time at the senior level, winning the 3,000-meter at the European Indoor Championships. She went on to finish sixth in the event at the World Indoor Championships.
Healy won her first Diamond League meeting in Rome on June 6, running 3:59.17. She finished second at her next Diamond League meeting in Paris on June 20, running a personal best of 3:57.15.
At the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, she made it through the heats and semi-finals, finishing in tenth place with a time of 3:59.14 in the final. Faith Kipyegon took home gold, her fourth World Championship title in the event.
