Valarie Allman Career | Valarie Allman Biography

Valarie Allman is an American Discus thrower and two-time Olympic gold medalist. After a promising high school career, she went to Stanford University. She made it to the NCAA championships in her first year, finishing 21^st and qualifying for the 2014 World U20 Championships, where she would finish second. 

Allman competed internationally for the United States again the next season, in 2015, when she threw 55.68 meters and finished fifth at the World University Games held in Gwangju, South Korea. 

She continued seeing improvements through the 2016 season, increasing her best distance to 61.42 meters and earning a bronze medal at the NCAA Championships.

Allman reached the top of her sport in 2018 when she won her first U.S. Championship and qualified for the World Championships in London, England. She didn’t make it past the qualifying round, but she gained valuable experience for later in her career. She also qualified for the World University Games again, this time finishing second in the discus.

Allman medaled again the next season at the NACAC Championships held in Toronto with a throw of 59.67 meters, finishing second.

After College

Allman started competing on the international circuit the next year, in 2019, throwing 63.39 meters at her first Diamond League Meeting in Stockholm. She also went on to win the U.S. Championships and finish 7^th at the World Championships in Doha.

Allman only competed once in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but she threw 70.15 meters, a new personal best and one of the longest throws of all time.

She found this form again at the Olympic Trials in 2021, throwing 70.01 meters to finish first. At the Olympics, she cruised through the qualifying with the longest throw and then topped Kristen Pudenz and Yaimé Pérex in the final to win her first Olympic Gold medal. On September 12th, she would break the American record with a throw of 71.16 meters in Berlin.

Allman won her first Diamond League meeting the next year in Birmingham, throwing 67.85 meters. She would go on to win the Prefontaine Classic and Meeting de Paris. Between 2022 and 2025, she would win an outstanding 19 Diamond League titles–every competition she entered in the circuit except for the Bislett Games twice.

With the World Championships on home soil in 2022, Allman started the year strong, throwing 71.46 meters in San Diego in April. She went on to finish third at the World Championships. China’s Bin Feng held on to get the win. She improved her finish the next year at the World Championships in Budapest, finishing second only behind her teammate Laulauga Tausaga.

The next time Allman threw over 70 meters was in both the qualifying and final of the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2024, when she threw 70.89 meters and 70.73 meters, respectively. She won easily, seven meters ahead of second-place Jayden Ulrich, before going on to win her second Olympic Gold medal in Paris.

She completed a perfect season in 2025, winning the World Championships in Tokyo and each of the 14 competitions she entered (not counting the qualifying round of the World Championships). It was her second perfect season in a row. At the time of writing, she hadn’t lost a competition since finishing second at the 2023 World Championships.
