Keely Hodgkinson breaking the indoor 800-meter world record was certainly the biggest storyline over the weekend. The 23-year-old smashed the indoor record in Liéven at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Trophée EDF by almost a second. She now has her sights set on the controversial outdoor record set by Jarmila Kratochvílová in 1983.
Other top storylines from the past week include Zaynab Dosso tying the world lead in the women’s 60-meter, Yasser Mohammed Triki jumping 17.35 meters in the men’s triple jump to take the world lead, and Armand Duplantis not surprisingly taking over the world lead in the men’s pole vault in his season debut.
The Oval Update World Athlete of the Week
Our selection for athlete of the week goes to Keely Hodgkinson for her world record-setting run of 1:54.87 seconds in Liéven on Thursday evening. The run broke Jolanda Čeplak’s time of 1:55.82 from 2002 by almost a full second. It’s also only 0.27 seconds off Hodgkinson’s outdoor best of 1:54.61, which captured her the Olympic gold medal in 2024.
After the Olympics, Hodgkinson battled injuries through most of the 2025 season and was unable to find the same form, not opening her season until mid-August. Still, she managed to walk away with a bronze medal at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
With all the success the 23-year-old has already had, one has to speculate that the outdoor world record of 1:53.28 must be at the forefront of her mind. Kratochvílová’s record has now stood for 43 years with very few serious threats.
The record is widely considered controversial since evidence has emerged of state-sponsored doping of Czech athletes through the communist era. Kratochvílová has remained adamant that she wasn’t doping, but many remain skeptical.
Dosso Ties World Lead, Breaks Italian 60m Record
Zaynab Dosso tied Julian Alfred for the world lead in the 60-meter of 6.99 seconds in Toruń at the World Indoor Tour Gold event, breaking the Italian record in the process. Dosso has the 34 fastest times ever run by an Italian woman, with Marisa Masullo’s time of 7.19 seconds being the next fastest.
Just behind Dosso in Toruń was Patrizia Van Der Weken of Luxembourg, with 7.01 seconds, and Amy Hunt of the United Kingdom with 7.04 seconds.
On the men’s side, Erik Cardoso became the third man under the 6.5-second barrier this year with his time of 6.49 seconds in Sao Paulo to set a national record.
In the women’s hurdles, Devynne Charlton ran the fastest time this year with 7.77 seconds in Toruń. Charlton is the world record holder in the event, having run 7.65 seconds in 2024.
Only 0.01 seconds off Charlton, Ditaji Kambundji ran 7.78 seconds in Toruń.
French hurdler Just Kwaou-Mathey ran 7.45 seconds for the third fastest time this year on the men’s side.
Distance Results This Week
Of course, the biggest middle-distance storyline this weekend was Hodgkinson’s world record, but at the same event, Olympic silver medalist Tsige Duguma ran 1:58.83 for her first race at this distance this year.
The fastest times in the world this year at the rarely contested women’s 2000-meter were all run in Liéven, with Jessica Hull taking the victory with 5:26.68. At the next distance up, Freweyni Hailu set a world lead in the 3000-meter with 8:24.59.
On the men’s side, Isaac Nader set the second fastest time in the world this year in over 1,500 meters in Liéven with 3:32.44. The fastest time remains Cole Hocker’s 3:30.80 from the week before.
Meanwhile, back in Toruń, victory in the men’s 1,500-meter originally went to Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela after running one of the best races of his career. However, after making a handgun gesture toward second-place Azeddine Habz at the finish line, the officials disqualified him for unsportsmanlike conduct and annulled his time of 3:32.55.
On the results sheet, Habz is credited with the victory and the third fastest time this year with 3:32.56. Just behind him, Dutch runner Samuel Chapple finished with 3:32.68.
Poland’s Maria Żodzik jumped 1.98 to tie Angelina Topič for the second-highest jump this year.
Duplantis Opens with World-Leading 6.06m, Triki First Man over 17m
We finally saw the return of Armand Duplantis since breaking the world record at last year’s World Championships in Paris. He cleared 6.06 meters at the All Star Perche in France, with Australia’s Kurtis Marschall grabbing second place with a personal best of 6.00 meters. His leap ties Emmanouil Karalis for the third-highest jump this year. Karalis also cleared this height in Lieveń.
Matvei Volkov went 6.01 meters in Belarus this weekend for the second-highest jump this year.
The men’s triple jump has finally heated up, with three men going over 17.00 meters. Yasser Mohammed Triki jumped 17.35 meters to take first in Lievin, while Jordan Scott took second with 17.11 meters. Andy Hechavarría went 17.03 meters in Cuba on the same day.
In the men’s shot put, Joe Kovacs set a season’s best with 21.92 meters for the fifth farthest throw in the world this year.
What’s Coming Up This Week?
The South American Indoor Championships start on February 28 in Bolivia. There are several World Athletics Silver Tour Events, including the Tipos Banskobystrická Latka in Slovakia on February 24 and Hvezdy v Nehvizdech in Czechia on February 25.
