What is World Athletics’ Point System Used For?

The World Athletics points system allows athletes, coaches, and fans to convert performance marks into standardized points that can be compared across different events and disciplines based on scoring tables.
Although originally developed for multi-event competitions like the decathlon and heptathlon, the system has evolved and now plays a crucial role in qualifying for international events, such as the Olympics or World Championships.
How Are Points Calculated?
Points are calculated based on performance tables published by World Athletics (formerly IAAF) that reflect the relative difficulty of each result. These tables have been in use since the 1960s, but their use has expanded over the years.
The current points system runs from 1 to 1400 points for each event and gender. A score of 1400 represents a performance over the current world record for all events.
Tables are updated periodically to reflect improvements in global standards, rule changes, and new events, ensuring fair and accurate scoring over time.
While they aim to provide a fair comparison between events, of course, it’s impossible to perfectly compare events. When comparing the points between events, it’s important to keep this in mind.
How Do Wind and Performance Bonuses Work?
In addition to raw performance points, additional points are added to performances in the short hurdles, horizontal jumps, and short sprints if the wind is sufficiently negative. A significantly positive wind can lead to points being taken away.
Bonus points are awarded for finishing highly at competitions from the grassroots level to the elite level. Smaller, local competitions give the least number of points, while finishing near the top of the field at the Olympics gives the most points.
How Long Do Points Last?
Most competition results are dropped from world rankings after a year, except for events that aren’t held annually, like the World Championships or Olympics.
For most events, your world ranking is based on your average of your top five performances.
