Sports Career of Ethan Katzberg | Ethan Katzberg Biography
Ethan Katzberg sits at the top of the world rankings and has established himself as one of the best hammer throwers of all time.
Ethan Katzberg started throwing the hammer as a teenager, when his father was coaching his sister in the event. He found early success, winning the Canadian U16 Championships in Brandon, Manitoba in 2017 with a throw of 61.54 meters.
Throughout high school, Katzberg trained with the Nanaimo Track and Field Club in his hometown. He moved to Kamloops after he graduated to work with Olympic bronze medalist in the shot put, Dylan Armstrong.
He would make his international debut in 2021 at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi. He would make it to the final but not register a legal throw. It would be the last season (as of the time of writing) where he didn’t finish with a major international medal.
In 2022, he would qualify for the Commonwealth Games and throw 76.36 meters to capture second place. The next season, he improved his personal best to 78.41 meters in May and broke this mark again at the Canadian Championships, throwing 78.73 meters. He would also win his first Diamond League Meeting with a throw of 77.93 meters in Paris.
At his very next competition after the 2023 Canadian Championships, Katzberg would sail through the qualifying round of the World Championships with a lifetime best mark of 81.18 meters and then set another best in the final, throwing 81.25 meters. The mark would secure him gold and give him a narrow victory over Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki.
Katzberg would set a personal best in a third consecutive meeting to open the next season, throwing 84.38 meters at the Kip Keino Classic on April 20, 2024.
At the Olympic Games, he would nearly match this mark again, throwing 84.12 meters and finishing first by over four meters.
At the time of writing, he had a world lead in 2025 with a mark of 82.73 meters.

On whether he thinks Ethan Katzberg can break the world record, the 2024 Olympic Bronze medalist Mykhaylo Kokhan of Ukraine has said, “If anyone could do it, it’s Ethan.”
On his Olympic-winning performance, Katzberg said:
“Our plan was to get a good one out in the first round. For it to be 84 metres, felt really good. Definitely released some of the nerves. And then kind of after that, I still tried to go for it, and, you know, get it, get a little more out. But unfortunately, I just couldn’t, couldn’t go on tactically, but the first 84 metres felt really good.”
The Canadian Camryn Rogers also won Olympic gold in 2024 in the female hammer throw, making both defending Olympic Champions in the event Canadian.
Katzberg is the youngest ever World Champion in the hammer throw and the first Canadian to reach the podium.
Ethan Katzberg’s parents are Bernie and Coralee Katzberg. His father coached Ethan and his sister before Ethan started working with Dylan Armstrong.
