Tina Clayton, and her twin sister Tia Clayton, are two upcoming sprinters who have already made their mark on international athletics.
Tina Clayton ran 12.12 seconds in the 100-meter when she was 12 years old, one of the fastest times ever recorded at that age. Two years later, she would record the fastest time by a girl age 14 or younger when she ran 11.27 seconds in Kingston at the Jamaican school championships.
Most of Clayton’s 2020 season would be disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but she would come back in 2021 to run 11.25 seconds at the Jamaican U20 Championships.
This would also be the season when she started to see international success. In July, she won the NACAC U18 Championships in Costa Rica with a new personal best of 11.17 seconds. She would follow this up by winning the U20 World Championships in Kenya the next month, running 11.09 seconds into a headwind. She would also win gold in the 4 x 100-meter relay with her sister.
Clayton would defend her title in both these events at the World U20 the next year in Cali, Colombia. Her winning time of 10.95 seconds in the 100-meter would be the fastest ever run by a 17-year-old.
She would continue dominating the 100-meter sprint in Jamaica the next season and also win the
5° Meeting Brazzale in Italy.
In 2024, she would take a step back and miss out on the Olympic Games, finishing fourth in her semi-final race at the Jamaican Championships and not advancing to the final.
Tina Clayton Personal Life and Other Facts
Tina has an twin sister, Tia, who is also a Jamaican sprinter. Together, the sisters won the 100-meter event at the U20 World Championships twice.
Their mother also used to sprint at a national level when she was younger.
Tina Clayton attended Edwin Allen High School in Clarendon, Jamaica. She was a member of the Jamaican team that won bronze in the 4 x 100-meter relay at the U20 World Championships. They broke the World Record, but the record wasn’t ratified since only Serena Cole, one of the four members, was drug tested. It’s World Athletics’ policy for all four members to be tested for records to become official.
Tina Clayton has raced her twin sister Tia Clayton 23 times, according to World Athletics. Tina has won 15 of their 23 races.
