Azeddine Habz ran the fastest 1,500-meter time in the world in 2025, posting a personal best of 3:27.49 in Paris on June 20. He was a late developer relative to many other middle-distance runners. He ran faster in his 30s than he ever did in his 20s.
Habz was born and raised in Morocco and became eligible to represent France in 2018. He won his first French Championships in October of that year, when he became the half-marathon champion. His first title on the track would come at the Indoor French Championships in 2020 when he ran 7:57.20 in the 3,000 meters. He would win this event again at the 2025 Championships and win the 1,500-meter in 2021, 2022, and 2023
Habz represented France at the 2020 Olympics, running the 1,500-meter, which would be his main event moving forward. He finished 10th in his semi-final.
Habz won his first outdoor French Championship in 2022 in the 1,500-meter. Later that year, he won his first international championship. His time of 3:41.65 took home gold at the Mediterranean Games.
He won his first medal at a European Championship in 2023, finishing third at the Indoor Championships in the 1,500-meter.
2024 Onwards
In February 2024, Habz ran 3:34.39 in the indoor 1,500-meter to improve the French national record. During the outdoor season, he ran 3:32.86 at the Rabat Diamond League to take home his first Diamond League championship.
Habz continued running well through the rest of the year, finishing seventh at the European championships ahead of the Olympics. At the Olympics, he made it to the semi-final, finishing 12th in his race. He ended his season by finishing fourth at the Diamond League Final.
In 2025, Habz finished second at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in the 1500-meter and third in the the 3,000-meter. He carried this success into the outdoor season, continuing to run some of the best times of his career.
On June 6, 2025, Habz ran his fastest time since 2023 in the 1,500-meter at the Golden Gala event in Rome. Two weeks later, he would smash his personal best with a time of 3:27.49. Not only did this time mark a world lead and a new personal best, but it also established a new French record.
In August, Habz won his third outdoor French Championship in the 1,500-meter run over four years.
Despite going into the 2025 World Championships with the fastest seed time run in 2025, he finished seventh in his heat with a time of 3:36.62 and took an early departure.

Habz was born and raised in Morocco and came to France in 2012. He received French citizenship in 2018 and studied sociology at the University of Paris.
His sponsors include Adidas, Val d’Europe Agglomeration, the 77 department, and Maxime Canu. He competes for the club Val d’europe Athletics.
According to an interview with Runix, in one recent training session that garnered him attention, he ran 10 kilometers in 30 minutes, took a five-minute break, and then ran another 10 in 29 minutes.
Before the Tokyo Olympics, he took 6 months of unpaid leave from his day job to prepare for the games.
