Emmanuel Wanyonyi
Sports Career of Emmanuel Wanyonyi | Emmanuel Wanyonyi Biography
Emmanuel Wanyonyi has emerged as one of the greatest 800-meter runners of all time despite only recently turning 21. He’s the defending Olympic Champion.
Wanyonyi’s first time competing internationally came at the World Athletics U20 Championships, which were held in his home country of Kenya in 2020. While there, he ran 1:43.76 to win despite still being a youth (under 18) athlete.
The next year, he would burst onto the global circuit while still only 17 years old for most of the season. After winning the Kip Keino Classic in Kenya, he would head to the Czech Republic to win the 61st Golden Spike in Ostrava. From there, he would head to Rabat, Morocco to run in the Diamond League for the first time. He would win the event, running 1:45.47.
Wanyonyi qualified for his first World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where he would run 1:44.54 in the final to finish fourth. Teammate Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir would take home the victory.
The year 2023 marked Wanyonyi’s rise to the top of the global stage. Wanyonyi opened his season by helping his country win the relay at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Australia before winning several prestigious events on the track, such as the Rabat and Paris Diamond Leagues, as well as the Kenyan World Championship Trials.
At the 2023 World Championships, he would run 1:43.83 in the semi-final to win his section. His time of 1:44.53 in the final would capture him second only behind Canada’s Marco Arop.
With the Olympics on the horizon in 2024, Wanyonyi would go into the season in his best shape ever. At the Kenyan Olympic Trials, he ran 1:41.70. At the time, this would be the ninth fastest time ever run at the event. He would follow this up with 1:41.58 at the Paris Diamond League, but would finish second behind Djamel Sedjati. The two times were the seventh and eighth fastest times ever recorded.
At the Olympics, Wanyonyi was one of the favorites, but several men in the field had also emerged as challengers for the world record. Wanyonyi would run a personal best of 1:41.19 to take home gold, with three other men also breaking 1:42. It marked the first Olympics that a time under 1:42 didn’t win a medal, with the American Bryce Hoppel running 1:41.67 to finish behind Wanyonyi, Arop, and Sedjati.
After 2024 Olympics
Wanyonyi would record yet another personal best before the end of the 2024 season at his next meet in Lausanne, running 1:41.11, which currently ties him with Wilson Kipketer for the second fastest man in the event all time, only behind David Rudisha’s time of 1:40.91.
On July 15, 2025, Wanyonyi ran another sub-1:42 time of 1:41.44 at the Monaco Diamond League to set a world lead. In August, he went on to win the Diamond League Final for the third consecutive year and reaffirm himself as the favorite going into the Tokyo World Championship.
In Tokyo, Wanyonyi once again found himself on top of the podium, running another spectacular time of 1:41.86. Sedjati and Arop finished second and third respictively, both also running under 1:42.00.
