Julien Alfred

Sports Career of Julien Alfred | Julien Alfred Biography

Julien Alfred is most well-known for winning the 2024 Olympics in the 100-meter, edging out the favorite Sha’Carri Richardson. The victory marked the first Olympic medal ever for her country, Saint Lucia.

Alfred has been competing in the short sprints since she was a child, with the first result on her World Athletics profile coming from when she was 12 and ran 12.34 seconds in the 100-meter.

She competed throughout the Caribbean and United States over the next few years, running faster than many NCAA Division I runners with an 11.77-second time in the 100-meter at the age of 13 and an 11.75-second time without wind information.

At the age of 14, she dropped her best to 11.53 seconds and 24.00 in the 200-meter. By the end of her high school career, she improved her time in the 200-meter to 23.74 seconds.

Alfred entered the NCAA in 2019, running for the University of Texas. In her first year, she improved her best to 11.39 seconds and 22.90 seconds. Unfortunately, her 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Upon her return, she dropped her best time to 11.07 seconds in the 100-meter in her first time running the 100-meter in three years. She then dropped her best to 10.81 and 10.80 seconds with a slight wind, at the BIG 12 Conference Championships.

She went on to win the 100-meter at the NCAA Division I Championships and qualified for the World Championships. Alfred was disqualified in the semi-final at the World Championships after running 11.05 seconds in the heat.

Despite the disappointment, she ran 11.01 seconds at the Commonwealth Games three weeks later, finishing second.

In her final season in the NCAA, she dropped under seven seconds in the 60-meter, running 6.94 seconds at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships to win. She also won the 200-meter at the indoor championships.

Alfred ran a wind-aided 10.74 at the Big 12 Conference Championships during the outdoor season and went on to win the 100-meter and 200-meter at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships, running 10.72 seconds and 21.73 seconds, both with winds over the legal limit. She continued her season by winning the CAC Games and finishing second at her first Diamond League Meeting in Monaco.

Competing at her second World Athletics Championships in 2023, she ran 10.93 seconds, finishing fifth in the 100-meter. She also ran 22.05 seconds in the 200-meter, finishing fourth.

In her first full season competing professionally, she ran a wind-legal 10.78-second time at the Racers Grand Prix in Jamaica, taking home gold. She also won the Monaco Diamond League, running 10.85 seconds into a negative wind.

2024 Olympic Champion

At the 2024 Olympics, Alfred ran 10.95 seconds in the heats, easily making it to the semi-final, where she posted the fastest time with 10.84 seconds. In the final, she ran a new personal best of 10.72 seconds to take home gold.

In the 200-meter, she ran 21.98 seconds in the semi-finals and 22.07 seconds in the final to take home second.

Alfred 2025 and Beyond

Alfred ran the second fastest times in the world in both the 100-meter and 200-meter in 2025, behind Melissa Jefferson-Wooden. She picked up another international medal with a third-place finish in the 100-meter at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. She had to withdraw from the 200-meter with a hamstring strain.
