Tia Jones
Sports Career of Tia Jones | Tia Jones Biography
Tia Jones has excelled in the short sprints and hurdles from a young age, running 12.11 in the 100-meter into a -2.0m/s wind when she was still only 13.
Her breakthrough came in 2015, when she ran 13.45 seconds and then 13.08 seconds with a +2.5m/s wind in the 100-meter hurdles at New Balance Nationals while still in grade 8, winning the competition. By the end of grade 11, she had already run the three fastest high school times in American history.
Jones had her first international experience at the World U20 championships held in Poland in 2016 at the age of 15. She finished third in the 100-meter hurdles despite still only being 15 and the youngest competitor in the competition. She also captured gold with the women’s 4 x 100-meter relay.
The next year, in 2017, she headed to Peru for the Pan American U20 Championships. Her time of 13.01 seconds captured her gold in the 100-meter hurdles. She matched this time again at the 2018 World U20 Championships, once again taking home gold.
Jones continued to improve over the next few years, competing in many of the top circuit meetings in the world.
In 2021, she suffered a complete ACL tear, but was able to rehab from the injury and come back better than ever.
In 2022, she made her Diamond League debut at the BAUHAUS-Galan meeting after running a personal best of 12.53 seconds at the New York Grand Prix. By the end of the season, she lowered her personal best to 12.38 seconds at the Memorial van Damme in Brussels.
2023 Onwards
Jones continued to establish herself as one of the best hurdlers in the world through 2023 and 2024. She tied the world record in the 60-meter hurdles at the USATF Indoor Championships in 2024 with 7.67 seconds in the heats, running 0.01 off this time again in the final.
Unfortunately, she required another ACL surgery in 2024. She was able to compete at the 2024 USA Olympic Trials 4 months later, but had to scratch the final of the 100-meter hurdles and didn’t qualify for the Olympic Team.
On May 2, 2025, Jones ran one of the fastest times of all time with 12.19 at the Grand Slam Miami. Masai Russell ran a new American record in the same race with 12.17 seconds. These two times currently rank Jones and Russell third and second all-time, respectively.
On July 5, 2025, Jones suffered a complete Achilles rupture at the Prefontaine Classic, which ended her season. In an Instagram post shortly after the injury, she posted:
“I’m still standing. I’m walking. I’m healing. I’m doing exactly what I need to do — not just for next season, but for every season after that. This isn’t the end of my story; it’s just a plot twist. I will be back.”
