Winfred Yavi

Sports Career of Winfred Yavi | Winfred Yavi Biography

Winfred Mutile Yavi is the defending Olympic Champion in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Although she’s originally from Kenya, she has competed for Bahrain since 2016.

Yavi achieved quick success in her sport, representing Bahrain at the 2017 World Championships at the age of 17 and finishing eighth in the steeplechase. The next season, she went on to win the steeplechase at the World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland. She also competed extensively in the Diamond League circuit and won her first Asian Games title.

Yavi won several other major regional titles in 2019, such as the Arab Championships in both the steeplechase and the 5,000-meter. She won both these events again at the Asian Athletics Championships in Doha.

Yavi improved her finish at her second World Championships, held in Doha, to finish fourth. To add to her accolades, she also won the World Military Games in Wuhan, China.

After the COVID-19 Pandemic

Like many athletes, Yavi’s 2020 season was disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She didn’t race at all between October and February.

Upon her return in 2021, Yavi focused exclusively on the steeplechase. At the 2021 Olympics, she won her heat and finished tenth in the final. She also finished top three at the Diamond League meetings in Doha and Monaco.

Yavi would continue to see improvements the next season, increasing her personal best in the 3000-meter steeplechase from 9:02.64 to 8:56.55 and finishing fourth at the World Championships. This personal best came at the Paris Diamond League meeting, where she took home her first Diamond League gold.

Yavi set another personal best in her 2023 steeplechase season opener and won her second Diamond League meeting in Doha with a time of 9:04.38.

She took this momentum into the World Championships in Budapest, running another personal best of 8:54.29 and taking home gold. She also went on to win the Prefontaine Classic and Weltklasse Zürich Diamond League meetings.

Going into the 2024 season, Yavi was the favorite to win the Olympics after setting the fastest time in the world the year before. She met these expectations, dipping under nine minutes again in Paris, running 8:52.76 to win her first Olympic gold medal over Peruth Chemutai and Faith Cherotich. Her time was 0.07 seconds off the world record.

Yavi returned to have another strong season in 2025, finishing second at the Tokyo World Championships with a time of 8:56.46, only behind Faith Cherotich.

Winfred Yavi Personal Life and Other Facts

Yavi’s decision to compete for Bahrain seems to have been motivated by a better opportunity to make the national team due to the stiff competition in the distance events in Kenya.

In a 2023 interview, Yavi said:

“The competition was stiff. You know that in Kenya we have a lot of athletes, and to get that chance, you should at least enter the Kenyan team. You can get into the Kenyan team, but you find that they take only two people; if you are number two or number four, you miss out. I was totally ready, but I never got a chance.”
